This, I believe…

“I believe dark chocolate is better than milk chocolate”

Sketches, lists, research:

In the beginning I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to do, my initial ideas were either chocolate packaging or chocolate bar campaign posters that compared dark and milk chocolate.

The first quote I started out with for Project 1 which lead me to early versions of the project that looked like this…

At first I was only focusing on the health benefits of chocolate but eventually I started to think deeper and realized that dark chocolate had benefits and milk chocolate didn’t… just like how there are benefits of going through and overcoming things in your life rather than taking the easy way out.

Because I couldn’t find a way to combine the two, I decided to drop chocolate all together and try a new concept.

I changed my quote to “I believe you can always find light in darkness” and came up with this next idea…

These are mini posters that show the bad in your life but when you lift the flaps up it reveals the “light” (positives) in every situation.

After presenting this I was told to find a way to still incorporate the chocolate in my project…

All chocolate bar packaging has nutrition facts that tell us what is good for us and bad for us which made this the best possible solution to the problem. Instead of having the positive facts of bad situations in your life in poster form I placed them into the nutrition fact section on the back of the wrapper. This way, dark chocolate becomes a metaphor for the bad situations everyone endures throughout their lives.

Before I added the white chocolate, my project only had 3 of the dark flavors.  In order to push the concept further and make it clearer to the viewer I added white chocolate to contrast the dark sections. The white sections are the good things in our life that hold us back from growing…They’re the “easy way out”.

I also change the front and back design of the chocolate bars—I made the wrapper longer on my final comp because the first one had too make horizontal lines when the chocolate bar was shown. I also changed the type on the back of the bar because the one on my first comp was a little all over this place, the changes I made make it easier to read. Not only did I change the way the type at the bottom looked but I also made it connect to my concept better by explaining a positive of these dark situations:
